Outfit Tips for Natural, Comfortable Family Photos
Coordinating outfits for a family photoshoot doesn’t need to be complicated. The goal is to wear something that feels like you, photographs well and works together without looking too matched.
Here are a few simple tips to help you feel comfortable and look great on the day.

Keep it simple and cohesive
Pick a loose colour palette and build everyone’s outfit around that. Soft neutrals like beige, grey, cream and olive work well in natural settings. If you’re after something with more colour, jewel tones like mustard, navy or burgundy also photograph beautifully.
Avoid neon colours, large logos or loud prints. These tend to pull focus away from the faces and connection in your photos.

Think about movement
Clothing with some softness or flow tends to look more natural in photos. Linen dresses, soft knits and relaxed button-downs all work well. Avoid stiff collars or tight, structured fabrics unless that’s part of your everyday style.
Make sure you can move easily. We’ll walk, sit and maybe even dance a little. Your photos will feel more relaxed if you’re not adjusting straps or pulling at clothes.

Dress for the location and weather
If we’re shooting by the coast, bring layers in case the wind picks up. For park or backyard sessions, closed-toe shoes are a good idea.
In cooler months, textured layers like wool, knitwear or corduroy can add warmth and depth. Comfort matters just as much as style.

It’s okay not to match
You don’t need everyone in white shirts and jeans. The goal is to complement, not copy. Start with one outfit you love and build from there. Mix tones, textures and layers so it feels considered without being too coordinated.

Let personality show
Accessories like hats or scarves can add variety, and favourite toys for little ones can help keep things calm. If your toddler insists on wearing gumboots or a superhero cape, sometimes the best thing to do is lean into it. Those photos usually end up being favourites.
