Mount Duneed Estate sits on a hundred acres out at Waurn Ponds, and between the Olive Grove for ceremonies, the vineyard for portraits, and the Barrel Hall for the reception, it’s one of those rare venues where every part of the day gives you a completely different backdrop without anyone needing to leave the property.
Jess and Michael got married here on a Friday in April, 92 guests, a 4.30pm ceremony in the Olive Grove with little white bells hanging from the trees, made by Jess’s great grandma, strung up for guests to walk past on their way to their seats.
What I love about shooting here
The Olive Grove is genuinely one of the best ceremony spaces I shoot in the region. Good natural light, established trees giving real texture and shade, and enough space that guests aren’t crowded right up against the aisle.
The vineyard rows nearby are where the bulk of couple and wedding party portraits happen, and the light through the vines in the late afternoon is consistently beautiful, no matter which direction you’re facing.
The Barrel Hall does double duty as your wet-weather backup and your reception space, and it photographs beautifully either way, exposed beams, good ambient light, nothing awkward to work around once the tables are set and the room’s lit for the evening.
And Jacqui, the events coordinator, makes the whole day genuinely easier to shoot. She keeps things running to time, which means I get to spend the day actually making the most of the light rather than working around a shifting schedule.
Photo timeline tips for Mount Duneed Estate
If the weather turns, know your backup plan in advance. Mount Duneed’s wet weather options are the marquee for light rain and the front vine room inside if it’s properly pelting down. The marquee itself is worth not worrying about, it lets in beautiful natural light even on a properly gloomy day, so it’s worth walking both spaces on your site tour and knowing which one you’d actually want.
Build a little extra time into your ceremony window for those small personal touches, the kind of thing Jess and Michael did with the bells in the Olive Grove. If there’s a meaningful detail you want captured, tell your photographer in advance so it doesn’t get missed in the rush of the day.
Leave time after the ceremony for vineyard portraits before the reception starts. The light through the vines is at its best in the couple of hours before sunset, and it’s worth protecting that window rather than letting it get eaten up by extended photo lines or long transitions.
Jess and Michael’s day
These two met between lockdowns at a bar in Brunswick, Jess out for her birthday, Michael sitting alone after skipping the COVID check-in line, and one of Jess’s friends calling out across the room asking if he’d been stood up. They got engaged in Port Douglas at sunrise on 4 Mile Beach, then spent the day snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef.
Jess and her bridesmaids got ready in Barwon Heads, and although they’d originally planned to skip a first look, they changed their minds, and the day was better for it. A sweet first look with her Dad, then another with Michael out in the Olive Grove before the ceremony, with wedding party photos following straight after. Their day at Mount Duneed was classy with a touch of rustic, exactly as they’d planned it. The ceremony in the Olive Grove ran through vows, rings and a first kiss before the whole bridal party moved through to the Barrel Hall for cake cutting, speeches and a night that ended with a sparkler send-off just before half eleven. When I asked what they’d want to be looking at in the album in ten years, Jess didn’t hesitate: their first kiss as husband and wife, and the sunset photos taken straight after.
